In Watermarks, Cole drastically forgoes the human figure (or any figure) altogether, instead finding shapes, movement, and patterns within ink drops and water. The latter being a recurring medium throughout much of Cole’s work, it is natural to find parallels with her overarching explorations of transformation in lieu of the figure. By honing in on the medium itself, Cole makes visible the hidden and ethereal movements of water in the same manner she often translates the invisible narratives of self into the visual language of photography.
